Pengfei Zai (b. 1994, Yangzhou) is a Shanghai-based artist whose
precise painting practice explores the interplay of time,
consciousness, and bodily perception. Since 2016, he has been
developing his ongoing series, Motion Sickness Medicine, by
using charcoal, ink, acrylic, and gel pens. Approaching painting as
a meditative calibration of the self, he captures subtle shifts of
perception within time, turning the act of painting into a pathway
toward inner consciousness and the structure of existence.
At the core of Zai’s work lies the tension between rational order
and subconscious energy - where measured grids meet intuitive
gestures to register the vibrations of body and mind. Zai Pengfei repeats measures, dots, and draws lines on paper, reaching
the depths of self-perception through rational observation.
